It's time to submit a card for the Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge #105. I managed to stick closer to the sketch than usual. This is a technique I've been wanting to try for a while. I first saw a tutorial HERE that explained stamping on metal and hand embossing the image and have been interested ever since. So here is my first stamping-on-metal card.
The flower image was stamped on the face of the metal in black Stazon ink then using a stylus, the flower was outlined. (Be sure the ink is dry.) I then turned the metal over on a piercing mat and using a paper stump and stylus I pushed the petals and leaves outward, emphasizing details on the leaves and flower petals. I added embossing paste to the back of the metal and allowed it to dry thoroughly. The paste keeps the flower and leaves from flattening.
Alcohol markers were used to add color to the flower and the leaves. Holes were pierced on the right edge of the metal piece then heavy baker's twine was laced through the holes. The metal was adhered to a piece of black cardstock. A piece of fun foam was adhered to the back of the black cardstock to pop up the floral image and provide dimension. That was adhered to the black card base with metallic DSP.
The inside of the card was lined with a piece of white cardstock stamped and heat embossed with flowers. The cascading sequins were added to balance the metallic elements on the card face. No sentiment was added in accordance with the sketch.
I found the most difficult part of this technique was preventing the metal from wrinkling. I kept having to burnish out the wrinkles with a bone folder but wrinkles remained.

ReplyDeleteThis card brings back memories (some 50 years ago) of a technique I used for a framed picture using some kind of a heated tool to draw a floral arrangement on a thin brass or bronze metal and then filled with clay in the back. Even with the heavier metal the piece wrinkled; but it doesn't take away from the creative work of art. And now you have created this in a card...amazing. Another scrap-lift on the technique is in order.

ReplyDeleteI found your blog interesting and inspiring, thank you for sharing your art work. It's great to try out a new technique, especially if its something you've been wanted to do for a while. Your cards are lovely you have managed to create a 3D effect which looks great! I definitely wan't to give embossing a go at some point.
